Migrating 1,800 Pages from Sitecore to a Headless Multilingual Strapi Architecture in 3 Months

Migrating 1,800 pages from a legacy Sitecore monolith to a flexible, multilingual Strapi headless architecture in 3 months while retaining all SEO equity.

Strapi · Node.js · Sitecore
Client: UAE Public Sector Organization
Sitecore to Strapi Migration for a UAE PSU

Project Overview

Our client, a large UAE-based public sector organization, needed to modernize their digital presence by escaping the restrictive licensing and high maintenance overhead of their legacy Sitecore CMS. They required a robust, API-first headless replacement that could handle multilingual content at scale while instantly improving content publishing speeds and the mobile user experience.

We executed a meticulous 3-month migration strategy to transition the PSU to a Strapi headless CMS architecture. Phase 1 involved crawling approximately 1,800 legacy pages to flawlessly replicate content, functionality, and SEO metadata. We successfully built the new Node.js-powered Strapi platform, mapped robust redirects to ensure zero organic traffic loss, and integrated essential third-party systems. Delivered end-to-end in just 3 months, the new platform provides massive cost savings and lays a scalable API foundation for Phase 2 mobile modernizations and Phase 3 AI-powered content enhancements.

Discovery & Blueprint Mapping

Prior to migrating data, our engineers deployed advanced crawling scripts against the legacy Sitecore portal. We inventoried approximately 1,800 pages, mapping out unique templates, reusable components, and documenting all core functionalities to establish a strict 1:1 migration blueprint for Phase 1.

Strapi Headless Architecture & i18n

We architected a highly flexible, API-first backend using Strapi. Leveraging Strapi’s built-in Internationalization (i18n) plugins, we constructed streamlined content workflows that allowed the organization’s publishing teams to securely and efficiently manage multilingual content across all digital channels from a single dashboard.

Data Migration & SEO Preservation

Transitioning to the headless architecture required meticulous SEO safeguarding. We transferred all content, metadata, and tags, perfectly preserving the original URL structures on the new frontend router. We also mapped rigorous 301 redirects to handle any structural anomalies, ensuring zero disruption to the PSU’s organic search footprint.

Systems Integration & Scalability

The new Strapi platform was seamlessly integrated with the organization’s existing ecosystem. We developed custom API middleware to connect the headless CMS with their legacy CRM and Web Analytics platforms. This highly scalable, API-ready foundation perfectly positions the PSU for Phase 2 design modernizations and future AI content enhancements.

By transitioning to an open-source Strapi headless CMS, the PSU entirely eliminated exorbitant Sitecore licensing fees while drastically accelerating their content publishing workflows.

With 1,800 pages migrated and perfectly redirected, the organization retained 100% of its critical SEO equity. The new API-driven platform meets all Phase 1 requirements for functional parity and multilingual support, while delivering a modern, highly optimized architecture ready for Phase 2 mobile redesigns and Phase 3 AI integrations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about this topic, answered by our engineering team.
Migrating to Strapi, a modern Node.js-based headless CMS, eliminates exorbitant Sitecore licensing and maintenance costs. It provides a highly flexible, API-first architecture that accelerates content publishing and allows for completely customized frontend experiences.
Before migrating, we crawled and scraped the legacy site to inventory 1,800+ pages. We carefully mapped all SEO metadata, preserved URL structures in the new frontend router, and implemented rigorous 301 redirects to ensure no organic rankings were lost.
We utilized Strapi's built-in Internationalization (i18n) plugin, enabling content editors to seamlessly manage and publish translated content blocks for different regional audiences from a single dashboard interface.
Strapi's API-first nature made integration straightforward. We wrote custom middleware to connect the headless CMS securely with the organization's existing CRM, analytics, and internal compliance platforms.
The decoupled headless architecture allows us to introduce AI-driven content enhancements, such as automated localization and metadata generation, directly into the Strapi backend APIs during Phase 3.
