Metadesign Solutions

Powering Seamless Benefits Enrollment with Secure, Accurate, and Automated EDI 834 Integrations.

Overview

MetaDesign Solutions partnered with a leading benefits administration organization to modernize its enrollment data exchange process through a Boomi-powered EDI 834 integration solution. The objective was to automate carrier file transmissions, minimize manual intervention, and improve data accuracy while maintaining compliance with ASC X12 standards. Using Microsoft SQL Server as the source system and Boomi as the middleware platform, our team designed, developed, tested, and deployed automated daily workflows with secure SFTP delivery. The result was a dependable and scalable integration ecosystem that improved efficiency, reduced errors, and enhanced visibility into enrollment transactions.

about the client

Our client is a leading employee benefits and healthcare administration enterprise that manages enrollment data exchanges between internal systems and external insurance carriers. With growing enrollment volumes and increasing compliance requirements, the organization needed a more dependable way to process and distribute member enrollment information accurately and on time. Their existing processes involved significant manual effort, making operations slower and more prone to data inconsistencies.

To support business growth and improve operational efficiency, the client initiated a digital transformation project focused on automating EDI 834 transactions for carrier communications. The goal was to establish a secure, standardized, and scalable integration model capable of handling daily enrollment updates while providing better transparency into transaction status and failures. MetaDesign Solutions implemented a Boomi-based solution that connected database systems with carrier endpoints, streamlined data mapping, and created a robust framework for future enhancements.

Industry Domain

Asset Management / Financial Services

Service Category (Service-line)

Automated Report Generation Platform / Publishing Automation / Enterprise Web Application

Technologies Used
  • Microsoft Azure (Azure Queue Services)
  • Python (Backend Automation & Load Balancing)
  • Adobe InDesign Server
  • API Integration (Data Retrieval & Transformation)
  • Cloud-based Architecture

Challenges

Manual enrollment file preparation and carrier submissions created delays and operational dependency.

Ensuring strict compliance with ASC X12 834 formatting requirements across multiple carriers.

Mapping structured SQL Server data into standardized EDI transaction formats accurately.

Lack of real-time monitoring and delayed identification of failed transmissions.

Need for secure and reliable daily file delivery using carrier-specific SFTP channels.

Solution Scope and Services

MetaDesign Solutions designed and implemented a complete Boomi integration workflow for EDI 834 enrollment processing. Microsoft SQL Server was configured as the source system, from which enrollment data was extracted and transformed into EDI 834 target formats. Based on each carrier’s companion guide, our team developed profiles, business rules, and field mappings to ensure accurate and compliant outbound files.

The solution also included secure SFTP connectivity for multiple carriers, automated scheduling for daily runs, production deployment packaging, and robust exception handling. Dedicated process queues, automated email alerts, and inquiry response workflows helped the client quickly identify and resolve issues. This significantly improved operational control while reducing manual workload.

01

Queue-Based Scalable Architecture

The implementation of a queue-driven architecture using Azure enables asynchronous processing of report requests. This ensures that the platform can handle high volumes of requests efficiently, allowing the system to scale seamlessly without performance bottlenecks.

02

Intelligent Load Balancing for Parallel Processing

A custom Python-based load balancing mechanism distributes workloads across multiple processing ports of the InDesign Server. This enables true parallel execution, significantly improving throughput and ensuring optimal utilization of system resources.

03

API-Driven Dynamic Reporting Engine

The integration of API-based data retrieval allows real-time population of templates with accurate data. Combined with automated scripting, this ensures flexibility, reduces manual errors, and enables rapid generation of customized, client-specific reports

Results

The solution delivered by MetaDesign Solutions enabled the client to modernize its reporting infrastructure and overcome critical scalability challenges. By transitioning from a manual, plugin-based workflow to a fully automated, queue-driven system, the organization achieved significant improvements in efficiency, reliability, and operational agility.

The platform now supports simultaneous report generation, drastically reducing turnaround

times while maintaining high levels of accuracy. Real-time tracking capabilities have enhanced transparency and user confidence, while automation has minimized errors and reduced dependency on manual processes.

This transformation has positioned the client to scale its reporting capabilities in line with business growth, ensuring faster delivery of high-quality reports and strengthening its ability to serve advisers and investors effectively in a competitive market.
